About Us

Our History

Kawakawa Primary School was established in 1873 and many of our families have attended this school across multiple generations. Our school has a unique history which continues even today to form the heritage we are so proud of.

Before Bay of Islands College was established, this school operated as the local District High School. Its catchment area extends from Pakaru Road to Moerewa, and from Ōpua to Kāretu, with historic ties to the Whangae area.

The school emblem resembles a Kawakawa leaf. Within the leaf are four kowhaiwhai that meet at a central kowhaiwhai. This signifies the four rivers that flow into the Kawakawa River. They are the Waiomio, Tirohanga, Taumarere and Ngapipito rivers.

Kawakawa Primary School draws its students from these four areas and they are the names of the school houses.

Despite a wide variation in home backgrounds and domestic circumstances our students are open, friendly and courteous.
